Known more commonly as nearsightedness, myopia is a serious eye condition that is widely prevalent. In the United States alone, roughly 40 percent of the population is nearsighted and that number only continues to grow. By 2050, nearly 5 billion may be myopic because of age, less time spent outdoors and increased eye strain due to computer screens and electronics.
The symptoms of myopia are easy to understand. Myopic patients can see nearby objects, but anything farther away quickly becomes a blur. Myopia is especially problematic in children, where it can cause learning difficulties and can progress aggressively. Early preventative treatment of the condition can slow down its progression and potentially mitigate the more serious consequences that develop later in life. The FDA has approved speciality contact lenses to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. At Family Eye Center, we specialize in contacts and other treatments that aid in myopia management.
