LASIK Co-Management in Davie, FL
LASIK is performed by a surgeon. The evaluation before it and the care after it are done here. That is what co-management means, and it is how most LASIK patients are looked after: you keep one eye doctor who knows your eyes, and the procedure itself is carried out by a surgeon we refer you to and work alongside.
Dr. Gramanzini has provided LASIK pre-operative and post-operative management since founding Family Eye Center in 1999.
Co-management means the decision about whether LASIK is right for you is made here, before you are referred anywhere. We measure your eyes, check the health of your cornea and tear film, and tell you plainly whether you are a good candidate. If you are, we refer you to a surgeon and see you for your follow-up visits afterwards. If you are not, we say so, and we talk through what else is available.
Before Your Surgery
The evaluation is the part that decides everything. Corneal topography maps the shape and thickness of your cornea, which is what determines whether there is enough tissue to treat safely. We assess your tear film, we check for any corneal irregularity that would change the outcome, and we confirm your prescription has been stable, because operating on a prescription that is still moving gives a result that drifts.
Why Dry Eye Matters Before LASIK
LASIK temporarily reduces corneal sensation, and that can make an existing dry eye problem noticeably worse afterwards. It is one of the most common reasons people are disappointed with an otherwise technically good result. We treat dry eye here, and where it is significant we would rather bring it under control before you have surgery than have you discover it after. You can read more on our dry eye treatment page.
After Your Surgery
Your post-operative visits happen here. We check that the flap has settled, that the cornea is healing the way it should, that your eye pressure is normal, and that your vision has landed where it was meant to. If something is not healing as expected, we find it early and coordinate with your surgeon.
If You Are Not a Candidate
Not everyone is, and being told so honestly is worth more than being sent for a procedure that will not serve you. Thin corneas, keratoconus, a prescription that is still changing, or significant dry eye can each rule LASIK out. There are good alternatives:
- Scleral lenses often give sharper vision than surgery would for an irregular cornea, keratoconus, or an eye that has already had refractive surgery.
- Ortho-K reshapes the cornea overnight with a lens rather than a laser, and it is reversible.
- Myopia management is the right route for a child whose prescription is still climbing, since LASIK is not appropriate until vision has stabilised in adulthood.
