Specialty Lens Care for Weston, Straight East on State Road 84

Family Eye Center is an independent optometry practice at 9090 W. State Road 84 in Davie, a straight run east from Weston along State Road 84 beside I-595.

Patients travel to us from Weston for one reason more than any other: lenses that somewhere else could not fit. We are not a chain. You see the same optometrist every visit, Dr. Massimo Gramanzini, who has fitted specialty lenses here since 1999.

When Standard Contact Lenses Have Failed

If you have been told you are hard to fit, or that you cannot wear contact lenses at all, that is usually a statement about the lenses that were tried rather than about your eyes. This is the work Weston patients most often travel to us for.

Scleral Lenses

A scleral lens is a custom lens that vaults clear over the cornea entirely and rests on the white of the eye, holding a reservoir of fluid against the eye all day. Because it never touches the cornea, it can correct vision on a surface that no ordinary lens can sit on, and it keeps the eye continuously bathed. We design them using corneal topography, OCT and Tear Stability Analysis System measurements rather than fitting from a standard set.

Keratoconus and Irregular Corneas

Keratoconus thins and steepens the cornea into an irregular shape, and glasses eventually stop being able to correct it because the problem is the surface rather than the power. Scleral lenses restore a smooth optical surface over that cornea. We also fit post-transplant eyes, post-surgical corneas and corneas that have been treated with cross-linking.

Hard to Fit Prescriptions

High astigmatism, presbyopia combined with astigmatism, very high prescriptions and eyes that have had refractive surgery all sit outside what an off-the-shelf lens is designed for. A proper fitting measures the surface of your eye and matches a lens to it, rather than trying the next size up.

Dry Eye Evaluation and Treatment

Chronic burning, grittiness, watering, fluctuating vision or the feeling that something is in your eye is not something you have to live with, and it is not solved by a bottle of drops chosen at a pharmacy. Dry eye has causes, and those causes are treatable once they are properly identified. We test for them rather than guess.

Common Questions from Weston Patients

How far is Family Eye Center from Weston?

We are at 9090 W. State Rd 84, Suite 101, Davie, FL 33324. From Weston it is a straight run east on State Road 84, which runs alongside I-595, and we sit between Nob Hill Road and Pine Island Road, next to Char Hut and Vienna Cafe. There is parking directly outside the door.

Do you accept my vision insurance?

We accept most major vision and medical plans, plus the employer plans of several hundred South Florida companies. Insurance benefits are genuinely confusing, so call (954) 423-8444 and our staff will confirm your coverage and explain what it includes before you come in.

What is involved in a scleral lens fitting?

It is not a single appointment. The fitting begins with corneal topography and measurement of your eye, then a trial lens is placed and assessed on the eye itself, and the design is refined until both the fit and the vision are right. Follow up visits are a normal part of that process rather than a sign something has gone wrong. You will also be taught how to insert, remove and care for the lenses before you leave with them.

Do I need a separate contact lens exam?

Yes. A contact lens evaluation is separate from a standard eye exam because it measures the surface of your eye and assesses how a lens fits and moves on it. A glasses prescription alone is not enough to order contact lenses safely.

Are scleral lenses good for dry eye?

They can be very effective. A scleral lens holds a reservoir of fluid against the cornea all day, which keeps the eye continuously bathed. For patients with severe dry eye who cannot tolerate other lenses, sclerals are often the option that finally works.

My child failed a vision screening at school. What now?

Book a comprehensive eye examination. A school screening is a rough filter, not a diagnosis, and it misses a great deal. If your child is nearsighted, this is also the point to discuss myopia management, because the earlier progression is addressed the more effective it is.

Can I be seen the same day?

For eye emergencies, yes. Call (954) 423-8444. For routine examinations, request an appointment online or call and we will find the soonest time that suits you.
